Dress for a portrait you will never regret!
Aunt Betsy realizes that your portraits are a serious investment. She takes the artistic and technical aspects very seriously so that you can simply have fun with your Portrait
Session. With your teamwork, she can create an artistic flair with any style of portraiture; whereas, avoiding these simple tips can break every vision you may have for lifelong
heirlooms.
General Tips:
Aunt Betsy views your portraits as a work of art, and she would love for you to do the same. Join her in planning so that you are completely pleased with the results of your Portrait
Session!
Where will your portrait(s) be hung? Consider the room’s design and colors, the available space and visibility then carefully create a portrait plan to coordinate. Particularly at the
planning stages, open communication is essential so that Aunt Betsy’s artistic flair can complete the “look” that you intend. Expressing your dreams to her will provide a wealth of
her artistic knowledge at your disposal.
If your portrait background is dark, plan to be in medium to dark attire; if your background is light, plan your attire to blend accordingly. This allows the natural skin tone to be the
attraction, accenting the face(s) in the portrait.
Note: In a photograph your eye will always go to the lightest thing and you want that feature to be your face. Remember simplicity is best! It is best to chose clothing that is darker
than your skin tones for your Portrait.
Babies:
Your precious little ones will shine through their portraits if clothing is simple and not overpowering to their tiny features. Color recommendations include white and pastels.
Clothing may be simple and elegant, simple and playful, or none at all!
Children:
Again, simplicity is best. Let your child have the spotlight and not his or her attire, no matter what the current fad may be! Bold patterns, colors, and characters on the clothing will
create a visual confusion and draw attention away from your darling little one. Especially if props are involved, allow your child’s clothing to be simple so that the viewer sees the
story through your child’s face. Discuss all props with Aunt Betsy so that your child’s giftedness, activities, and current moods show through.
Teens and Adults:
Because the skin attracts attention, select clothing with reasonable cuts, i.e. not too bulky and not too revealing. Exaggerated V-necks or boat-necks distract attention from the face;
natural tone nylons or bare legs have a similar affect.
Will shoes show in the portrait? Be sure to keep shoes and stockings in line with the visual objectives of the overall Portrait Session.
